I’m not talking about a top-tier Ivy League-type school nor am I talking about bullcrap online universities. Just an average school with a decent reputation, how valuable is a MBA in Accounting nowadays?

To work in corporate accounting, a BA might be all you need. However, you’ll be just like everyone else. In other words, you won’t stick out above all the other accountants with BAs. If you want to progress above senior accountant, an MBA might help.
In the public accounting world, more states are requiring the 150 credit hour of education in order to sit for the CPA exam. This is the education level recommended by the AICPA. I’ve also read somewhere that all states were going to require the 150 credit hours sometime in the near future. So, if you plan on being a CPA, you might as well get the MBA in accounting or Master’s in accounting. It will only be another 6 to 12 credit hours above the 150. A Master’s degree isn’t required to sit for the CPA exam, but 150 credit hours are. The extra credit hours don’t have to be graduate credits either. But, if you’re going to get an extra 30 credit hours, you might as well get the Master’s.
Good luck

My daughter, who has a BA in accounting, has been looking into this. It seems as though many people who go into the accounting profession are opting for the BA and CPA. If you get the MBA in accounting (say, perhaps because you do not have a BA in accounting) and then want to get into a top accounting firm, you may still need to sit for the CPA.

Bullcrap online universities yes some are – but some are selective and are excellent in educating their students.

Since the AICPA went to the 150 hour requirement, most students continue on through a Masters Program, usually an MBA. At the same time, they’ve made the CPA exam much easier.
So these days, an MBA is almost the standard credential for a newly graduating accountant, with the CPA as a throw in for sitting through the additional credits.

I notice in corp. America that an MBA is important for all jobs. I don’t agree with it, but I am not the one hiring.
