Does It Really Matter Where I Go To School For An Mba Since I’m An Engineering Major?

I’m not that sure I would get an MBA, but I think it might be good. I’m currently a third year nuclear engineering student, and I am probably going to get a masters degree as well. Would an MBA be that helpful? Would it be acceptable to do one online?

  1. Yes, it matters a lot where you go for an MBA. Whether you should do one or not depends on whether you are planning to move out of doing engineering into managing engineers, or whether you want to continue doing hands-on engineering. The MBA would be helpful when you are ready to make that move to middle management.
I wouldn’t recommend doing your MBA for several years. I don’t think it would be helpful if you tried to do it right out of undergrad, but five years later or so, it should make a difference IF you go to a good school. It is hard to know where online programs might be at that time; right now, I wouldn’t recommend it, especially if you are capable of getting into a stronger program. None of the better MBA programs offers an online program right now.

  2. It matters from which school you get the MBA because there are good, mediocre, and poor MBA programs. An MBA and engineering degree is an excellent combination. Many good schools offer distance learning MBA programs.
Before you consider which MBA program is for you, consult the Official MBA Guide, a comprehensive free public service with more than 2,000 MBA programs listed worldwide. It allows you to search for programs by location (US, Europe, Far East, etc.), by concentration (finance, marketing, aviation management, health management, accounting, etc.), by type of program (full-time, distance learning, part-time, etc), and by listing your own criteria and preferences to get a list of universities that satisfy your needs. You can use the Guide to contact schools of your choice, examine their data, visit their web site, and send them pre applications. You can see lists of top 40 schools ranked by starting salaries of graduates, GMAT scores, and other criteria. It’s the best service available at http://officialmbaguide.org.

  3. Its better to get the masters because your pay will increase and your job will require you to be up to date on new technologies. But i don’t think it will work online maybe part time .
