Do You Need An Mba To Own A Hospital?

December 6th, 2009

I am planning on getting an MD and I am basically almost done with it, I am in my second year and besides taking a few exams which are not that big of a deal, I should be good to go. But my real goals in life are to own and run my own hospital(s). Do I NEED an MBA to do this, or is it just a recommended thing?

    To own a hospital? No.
To run it? Recommended, but not necessarily required.
An MBA would be helpful in terms of gaining greater understanding on how to tackle larger concepts that pertain to acting as essentially a Chief Operating Officer. Hope this helps.

To own a hospital, all you need is the money to buy or build it.
To the best of my knowledge, there are no mandatory educational requirements to run a hospital, either, though if you want to run one well then some experience, training and education in business/administration could be very useful.
I would hazard that if you are trying for hospital administration positions at any places you don’t personally own, an MBA could also be an advantage to have on your application.
